Strengthening L3 French Motivation: The Differential Impact of Vision-Enhancing Activities

Even though the European Union has long promoted multilingualism, it proven difficult to achieve widespread multilingual language competence beyond English through formal education in Europe. In Sweden, high dropout rates have been recorded second foreign (SFL) classes, and French is currently most vulnerable among major SFLs with respect number of pupils availability across country. Therefore, an important question how increase motivation for studying languages other than (LOTE), especially French. This paper reports on a semester-long quasi-experimental intervention study, three activities designed enhance pupils’ ideal L3 self (IL3S) their intended effort (IE) learn Data were collected two grade 9 classes (n = 45) control class 14) Sweden using questionnaires focus group interviews. We measured effect pre- post-tests both groups additionally after each activity classes. The results showed no overall significant intervention, but positive IE students highest level IL3S prior intervention. Moreover, gender differences found initial IE. are discussed relation ease accessing self-image characteristics that effects. Methodological challenges involved studies intact also highlighted.
